Topic says it all. When will a version of QuickText be made available for Thunderbird 8.0? Why must we go through this each time? |
Second, really wish I didn't update to TB8 :( |
Modify the max-value to 8* in the install.rdf inside the xpi-file (zip-format) and after installation it works fine. |
"Modify the max-value to 8* in the install.rdf inside the xpi-file (zip-format)" I'm sorry. I don't understand this. Are you referring to QuickText Pro? If I buy Pro, will it be easier to change as Thunderbird updates appear? QuickText has been a time lifesaver for me. Thanks for a reply. |
This install.rdf fix works great!
I also just learned that PKZIP can edit these xpi archives in place, no unzipping and re-zipping needed. (This was a pleasant surprise to me.)
My XPI archive was located at:
C:Users<my-account>AppDataRoamingThunderbirdProfiles<my-profile>.defaultextensions{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}.xpi
You may have to guess which xpi archive is the one for QuickText if you have multiple extensions. |
Worked like a charm, thanks for tip guys. |
PKZIP trials:
32bit - http://pkware.cachefly.net/products/pkzip/win/pkz140023en.exe 64bit - http://pkware.cachefly.net/products/pkzip/win/pkz140023enx64.exe |
@my1es - Thanks for sharing that tip about editing "in place". Just for the record, I used 7-ZIP to do the exact same thing...it worked perfectly. We're back in business! |
Thank you, TKASLE and JPEG!!! Just to know: 7ZIP portable works fine too...
Download 7ZIP here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R9NPLEG0 |
seems like the problem is easily solvable for PC, but for the Mac users amongst us? |
found it - you have to right click, open package contents of Thunderbird icon in applications, then go to: Contents>MacOS>extensions>{xxxx}>install.rdf open with text edit and change values |
lfcorullon: Don't thank me. I'm an old fogey still trying to work this out. I found where my extensions are. I downloaded trial of PKZIP. But I don't understand how to open/edit with PKZIP. Can someone give me a crash course? I'll check back tomorrow. Thank you all. |
Thanks for this help.
But, to the developers: please, why dont you change the max-value in the install.rdf and offer it to download right now, when it is neccessary?
That would save a lot of time to all the users of your great addon. |
Honestly, have to agree with raaraa. This is the one extension I rely on more than any other, and always the one that is deemed "incompatible" with each update of Thunderbird! I'm not a programmer or developer, and honestly not comfortable with editing installation packages. If it's as simple as changing a number, it would really be wonderful to see this add-in made compatible with updates at the same time as the other add-ins I use. |
I figured out how to open the XPI file using WinRar and extracting it to a folder. I then edited the install.rdf file and changed the 7 to an 8. Now I don't know what to do. I tried re-compressing it with WinRar and Windows Compressed folder and changing the extension to .xpi and it won't install in TB. Says the extension is corrupt. How do I fix it? |
great fix petert.....also agree with raaraa......quicktext is awesome and is a permanent addon for many of us... |
Please help a non-techie move quicktext to 8.0. |
Here's a version of the XPI with the max value bumped up to 8. http://5xl.com/addons/quicktext_0.9.11.2.8.xpi |
Thank you 5xi.com . That worked!!!! I just wish we didn't have be to hassled every time TB decides to upgrade itself. | 1 2 You need to login before posting in the forum |
