I'm a normal user just like you, but I also a JavaScript developer used to develop Mozilla extensions. I'd like to give you guys a modified version of quicktext, and I use it everyday.

First, I have fixed issues mentioned at:
http://extensions.hesslow.se/forum/thread/620/Error+with+variable+%5B%5BTO%3Dfirstname%5D%5D+in+Thunderbir/

In additions, I have added two variables, which are [[HOME]] and [[END]] to control the inserted text position.

So, don't hesitate. Download it below.

This did fix some of the issues, but it still doesn't work in 17 :(
Not complaining, I appreciate what you did, I just don't want to think about not having this plugin with the next update.

@WebWeaver64: I will check this issue and upgrade the modified version if I have time.

With the recent versions (now 16.0.2) of Thunderbird I've observed a new behavior of quicktext :

1/ when the addressee is a simple e-mail address (let's say without firstname) and when the html script of a signature refers to an empty attribute (e.g. [[TO=firstname]] ) the call to this signature yields nothing at all (instead of the expected result with a "blank" first name)

2/ when the html script of a signature contains "[[CURSOR]]", the call to this signature writes the string "[[CURSOR]]" instead of just positioning the cursor at the occurrence of this keyword

However Quicktext is still a precious tool !
