Looks like there may be an incompatibility issue with the new thunderbird 3.1

Beware of installing until there is a fix
meijerpb2010-06-26 10:03:00
I just installed Thunderbird 3.1, and indeed Quicktext (0.9.10.1) is not compatible. I hope we'll very soon see a version of Quicktext that works with Thunderbird 3.1!

Well, for the time being I just updated the maxVersion for Thunderbird in install.rdf (in quicktext_0.9.10.1.xpi) and it seems to work well enough in TB 3.1, but of course without any guarantees that it is safe and stable. I hope that Emil can soon release an official update.

Just reinstall the latest version which support 3.1
malavio2010-06-29 13:59:23
Thanks WizKid! I did what you recommended and it works just fine!

Just tried installing 0.9.10.1 over TB 3.1, but will not allow because of incompatibility. Anyone know how to make it work, step by step?

Getting QT 0.9.10.1 running under TB3.1 is an Issue for me. I just love QT. meijerpb, could you explain to a non programmer what the steps are updating the maxVersion?
kohlmannj2010-07-10 18:00:03
Okay, please take this with a grain of salt and DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

1) Download the latest Quicktext .xpi file
2) Rename the file extension to .zip
3) Unzip the contents into a folder
4) Once everything is unzipped, look for the file named install.rdf
5) Open this file with a text editor
6) Look for a line about halfway through the file like this " <em:maxVersion>3.0.*</em:maxVersion>" NOTE: There are two of these lines, one in the "Thunderbird" section, and one in the "Postbox" section. You only want to edit the "Thunderbird" one.
7) Change the "3.0.*" to "3.1.*"
8) Save the edited file
9) Re-zip everything in the folder into a .zip file
10) Change the .zip extension to .xpi
11) Install the add-on in Thunderbird
12) Restart Thunderbird
13) Enjoy!

For some strange reason, I had to restart T-bird twice to get it to recognize the new extension, but I have no idea why that might be.

Good luck!

No, just reinstall the latest version found on extensions.hesslow.se
nedimcb2010-07-11 04:23:16
Thank-you. The file at your extension page worked on TB 3.1 (although it had to be installed twice before it appeared on the menu).
kohlmannj2010-07-11 22:56:20
I tried installing it 4 or 5 times on TB 3.1 and it never worked for me, no matter where I downloaded from. It wouldn't even begin the install, basically saying "This add on is not compatible". Based on what others wrote, it seemed like I wasn't the only one. Anyway, after changing the file, it has worked fine ever since. Hopefully this will help others until the latest version is released.

Qtext is my favorite Tbird addon. However, when I installed Tbird versions 3.0 and 3.1, Qtext disappeared without warning.
Two questions:
1) It is unclear if the latest version of Qtext can be installed in Tbird 3.1?!
2) How can I recover the text I had in the disappeared Quicktext?
Thanks, CMA
cmar2010-07-17 16:30:35
If I click on Tools/Addon/Extentions tab, I see Quicktext grayed out.
Is there a way to recover the contents of the texts stored in Quicktext?
cmar2010-07-17 19:50:59
Problem solved.
After uninstalling Qtext, I was able to install Qtext from extensions.hesslow.se without incident.
The reinstalled Qtext had all the texts intact by some miracle.
Even if had not Quicktexts, they could have been found in the file "quicktext.xml" (I think that is the name.)
aleut2022010-07-30 08:15:37
Success!

I followed kohlmannj's advice but must have mistyped something because my new .xpi file would not install ("Install script not found" or the like).

So I followed cmar's routine and...it worked! Just curious, I downloaded a second fresh copy off from http://extensions.hesslow.se/extension/4/Quicktext/, unzipped it, checked the install.rdf file, and guess what? The maxVersion variable had already been changed to "3.1"!!! Obviously Emil updated this little feature but kept the version number the same, 0.9.10.1. I think this is unfortunate because if he had updated it to 0.9.10.2 (the current pro version!) or even 0.9.10.15, that probably would have triggered the auto-update feature in TB to download and install the new version, which would have eliminated the need for this thread (I think).

Anyway, thanks, kohlmannj, for the geeky inside look, and, cmar, for the quick and easy way.

Thankyou - does all the above apply with a Mac? I have upgraded to 3.1.1 too and can't get Quicktext to install despite trying the suggestions above. When I get to this point:

0) Change the .zip extension to .xpi
11) Install the add-on in Thunderbird
12) Restart Thunderbird
How do you get it to install? Clicking Open With Thunderbird achieves nothing.

Thankyou!

Resolved. If you are having similar issues, here's the solution.
1. Uninstall old Quicktext
2. Download latest version from this site. There is no need to change anything in the install file as suggested in earlier posts.
3. Install using the procedure outlined here
